Motivation is the extent to which persistent effort is directed toward a goal. Made up of : effort: strength of the person"s work-related behaviour, persistence: working hard for 2 hours, loafting for 6 is not persistent, direction: quality of a person"s work. Do workers channel their effort in a direction that benefits the organization: goals: all motivated behaviour has some goal or objective toward which it is directed. Intrinsic motivation: stems from the direct relationship between the worker and the task (autonomous motivation). Usually self-applied from feelings of achievement, accomplishment, challenge, and competence. Extrinsic motivation: stems from the work environment external to the task. (controlled motivation) usually applied by others such as pay, fringe benefits, company policies, or supervision. Self-determination theory: a theory that considers whether people"s motivation is autonomous or controlled. Motivation doesn"t always translate into good performance (turhan). Performance is heavily dependent on two types of intelligence.
