BU288 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Decision-Making, Shared Experience, Absenteeism
Document Summary
Why do people join groups: security: strength in numbers. Being a part of a group reduces the insecurity of standing alone that might be created by management. Being a part of a union gives the group negotiating power: goal achievement: takes more than one person to achieve a particular task, pooling knowledge together in order to accomplish a task. Identification: will join a group to identify with the group or a cause, this will set the tone for how we dress, look, and how we behave. Organizations will take advantage of this by having employees where shirts with the company logo. Stages of group development: each stage has to go through a different stage, prestage 1, stage 1 forming: orient themselves to a group and figure out what the goal is. Ambigious at this point because we are unsure of what we are going to contribute.
