Document Summary
To summarize a source, you briefly restate an idea in your own words. Maintain the emphasis of the original you cannot take things out of context or misrepresent the intent of the author. Expect your summary to be shorter than the original. To paraphrase, you maintain all the detail of the original, but put into your own words. Restate the entire idea in your own words; consider each sentence. Expect your paraphrase to be as long or longer than the original sometimes it takes us more words to communicate these ideas in a new way. To use a quotation, incorporate the actual words from your source into your writing. Signal it is a quote with quotation marks. Do not start a sentence with quotation marks.
