Simple diffusion is the simplest form of passive transport: requires no metabolic energy, substance moves down concentration or electrochemical gradient. But how efficient is it: not very over long distances, 1mm in 100 seconds. Symport occurs when material is transported in the same direction as the movement of protons and solutes; organic uptake. Antiport occurs when material is transported in the opposite direction to movement of protons and solute; na+ export. Diffusion is the spontaneous movement of molecules or particles along a concentration gradient. Osmosis is a special case of diffusion: water molecules diffuse across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration (low solute concentration) to a lower water concentration (high solute concentration). Hypertonic solution: higher concentration of solutes outside of the cell (cells shrivel, water moves outside of the cell). Isotonic solution: equal concentration of solutes inside and outside of the cell (cells remain normal).
