Document Summary

Module 26: cellular respiration ii: the citric acid cycle and oxidative phospphorylation. Pyruvate + coa + nad+ acetyl-coa + nadh + h+ + co2. Pyruvate must be transported across 2 membranes (made in cytosol transports to intermembrane space) Non-selective porin (big channels) allows diffusion across omm (outer membrane matrix) Mpc actively transports pyruvate across imm (inner membrane matrix) Pyruvate oxidation is a 3-step process catalyzed by a large complex called pyruvate dehydrogenase. Acetyl groups completely oxidized to co2 (2 carbons lost) 8 steps in the cycle, each with its own enzyme to catalyze the reaction (aka 8 enzymes involved : 7 of them are in the mitochondria matrix , the 8th one is inner mitochondria membrane succinate dehydroginase) Electrons donated from high energy electron carriers nadh and fadh2, ultimately getting accepted by o2. 2 smaller mobile electron carriers ubiquinone (uq) & cytochrome c (cyt c) Electrons pass through carriers in a particular order.
