Velocity specifies both speed an direction of an object and can change when speed changes, direct changes, and both speed and direction changes. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with time where the change in velocity divided by the time taken for the change to occur: speeding up is acceleration and slowing down is negative acceleration or deceleration.
