Ephors: 5 elected annually from age 30+ (only in sparta) Acted as check on kings powers- could charge kings for not following laws. Tried civil cases of citizens as well as civil/criminal cases of perioikoi. One ephor was eponymous- one named was used to signify the year. Control over state education of male children- putting them into barracks at 7 yrs, enforcing famous iron discipline.
