Served to provide continuity of policy since it was made up of the previous magistrates of the quaestorship, praetorship, aedileship and consulship. Started off as a council of wise old men, but it became made of nobles. Senate met in the curia (senate house) in the roman forum. Were an advisory board for the current magistrates.
