Share general perceptions & understanding of: who/ what archaeologists look like etc. Ar(cid:272)haeology"s relatio(cid:374)ship with the (cid:373)edia: benefits: Interest: awareness, engagement (monitor sites to protect them, support (financial, disadvantages, stereotypes (what archaeologists look like and what they do, emphasis on exotic, focus on differences (usually looking for commonalities but opposite, privileges entertainment value over education (movies) How (cid:373)ass (cid:373)edia (cid:272)o(cid:374)tri(cid:271)utes to the pu(cid:271)li(cid:272)"s k(cid:374)owledge of ar(cid:272)haeology, depends upon public cooperation. Magazines: (cid:862)hairy chested(cid:863) a(cid:374)d (cid:862)hairy chi(cid:374)(cid:374)ed(cid:863) =reductionist mode (form of communicating in a simplified matter) Movies: culture history, approach to archaeology, material culture used to identify ethnic & culture groups, arrange them in a temporal sequence. No indicator of true goals and aims of archaeology. Interdisciplinary (lots of different fields are involved biology, culture and the environment and how that influences people"s behaviour) Sites are exciting, dangerous but not a focus of inquiry.
