The comma: use a comma between independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, etc ) Can leave the comma out if the clauses are short. I ran, and they cheered: use a comma to separate a series/list. The oxford comma the comma before the coordinating conjunction. Use it when there may be confusion. With geographical names: comma to set off parenthetical elements introductory words and phrases, non restrictive elements, etc . Sets off an introductory word/short phrase with a comma if you want a short pause. When words, phrases, clauses are not essential to the principal meaning of a sentence. Should be set off from the rest of the sentence. Umar"s essay won the contest, which was sponsored by the local paper (non- restrictive) We don"t need this to understand the actual meaning of the sentence. Nonrestrictive appositives: nouns that redefine, in more specific terms, the nouns they follow.
