The post war period: post-war period created the idealized image of the nuclear family, re-building the damage caused by wwii was a longer and costlier exercise. The usa after wwii: 1/3 lived in poverty, 1/3 no water, 2/5 no flushing toilets, 3/5 no heating, more than had no electricity. Britain after wwii: caused huge damage, effects lasted a long time, following the war economic boom, rationing lasted until mid (cid:883)(cid:891)(cid:887)(cid:882)(cid:495)s, many people couldn(cid:495)t afford expensive private health care, housing was in short supply. Other factors: major redistribution of wealth through taxation, national health service provided universal health care, schools were improved and universities were built, women were given more access. Contraception: coitus interruptus was a favoured method of the working class; it was cheap and did not involve costly and embarrassing visits to doctors pulling out, condom use was also prevalent amongst all classes, but barrier methods.
