Women's Studies 2161A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cindy Mccain, Femininity
Document Summary
Global motherhood: the transnational intimacies of white femininity: transnational pity vs. transnational justice, do we feel guilty about their suffering or are we actually addressing the issue, people don"t need pity, they need justice, policies, inequality. Imperialism: policy, practice, power domination, gaining political and economic control over other areas. Colonialism: an empire appropriates another person"s labour, natural resources, etc. Women"s roles: motherhood is not a private activity. Cindy mccain: adopted daughter, husband ran for president, welcome with open arms, really against same sex marriage. But, the contradiction: we hate the conditions that produced the native child, love and intimacy are not apolitical, always political, motherhood is mediated through relationships of power. Contemporary/historical connections: white, patriarchal heterosexual nationalism, not talking about what other families struggles are, to collect children from all over the world multicultural family, humanism situated with transnational pity, classed and raced not accidental. Transnational intimacies: moral project, not valuing injured, lesbian mothers, other types of intimate relationships.
