The ancient greeks refused to allow women to compete in the olympics (although they recognized the amazons as warriors) Sports were often a way of practicing for war, but could also be cultivated for higher purposes; the early olympics included competitions in music, poetry, etc. that were as highly regarded as the athletic events.
