Women"s studies lecture 4: butch identity & female masculinity. What is important from our point of view is the idea of different identities. Sexuality is getting divided into different identities (homosexual, heterosexual, invert) A community starts to build over the 20th century city centres are more anonymous. Radcliffe hall was living among a community of self-proclaimed inverts and lesbians. Foucault"s concept of reverse discourse": it becomes appropriated into a different signification. Doesn"t just happen with the word homosexuality it also works with other terms. (example: woman) The apa only removed homosexuality from its diagnostic manual in 1973. Trans - sexuality is still considered a sexual disorder. Identity politics: grouping of individuals around a particular identity issue, questions, comments, concerns. Identity politics are crucial in gaining minority rights. Bases for solidarity and activism lie in the idea of a shared social identity.
