The maternal function in humans is not at all natural; it is a completely social construction, defined and organized by building standards according to the needs of a population specific to a given time in history. Motherhood has had different meanings at different points in history. History of motherhood includes of several major phases which demonstrate the evolution of contemporary issues regarding the status of mothers and the role of women in society. Women"s responsibility to have children who would ensure the survival of the community. Mothers are not only fulfilling individual roles, but they are also fulfilling a cultural role in society giving things to the greater good. No clear biological link between father and child. No way to determine a child"s biological father with 100% certainty. Roman law gave fathers complete authority over their children. A way to ensure that fathers are respected. Maintained some authority over their children, particularly during infancy and early-childhood.
