The science of sex: genetic sex= chromosomes, gonadal sex=ovaries/testes, hormonal sex=estrogen/testosterone, somatic sex=body anatomy, physiology, psychological sex=sexual identity. Merms (male pseudo hermaphrodites) - testes + vagina. Ferms (female pseudo hermaphrodites) - ovaries + penis. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (cah: females born with masculine-looking external genitals. Sometimes a person isn"t found to have intersex anatomy until she or her reaches the age of puberty, or finds himself an infertile adult, or dies of old age and is autopsied. Some people live and die with intersex anatomy without anyone (including themselves) ever knowing. Many first nations traditionally have multiple gender systems. Transgender is not a sexual orientation; transgender people may have any sexual orientation: a person who experiences a mismatch of the sex they were born as and the sex they identify as. A transsexual sometimes undergoes medical treatment to change his/her physical sex to match his/her sex identity through hormone treatments and/or surgically.
