Major negative events: victim of major crime/abuse, loss of loved one, academic failure. All three of these events have impact on psychological and physical well-being. Stress = negative life changes (by modern researchers) Stress: a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding situations. Stress responce: primary appraisal, appraisal of the demand of the situation, how bad do you need the job. 2. secondary appraisal: appraisal of resources available to cope with it, knowledge, abilities, verbal skills and social resources. 3. judgments: of what the consequences could be, increases stress, appraisal of the personal meaning, what outcome might imply to us, basic beliefs about yourself or the world.
