Theories provide with tools to approach problems in the life and understand where we"ve been and where we might be going. Power and hierarchies are contestable; they can be struggled against and shared. Empowerment: power can be gained through knowledge and knowledge can enable people to live more fulfilling lives. Different streams of feminism agree on the need to empower women; they differ in terms of where they identify the roots of the oppression. Women, as early feminists, began to contemplate their sites of oppression. The principles of classical liberalism: all men should be equally free to pursue liberty and freedom. Suggesting change within the system to challenge patriarchal oppression or dependency-give women access to education, the property ownership, political participation, personhood under the law, wage equality. Based on meritocracy, sought equal opportunity and freedom of choice. (gained federal vote) An appeal to white womanhood and nation building: the war effort.
