Chapter 4 probability (the study of randomness) Probability theory allows us to mathematically model the possible outcomes of an experiment. 1. classical probability: this is used when the experimental outcomes are equally likely to occur. Example tossing a fair coin 4 times. 2. relative frequency probability: when it is difficult or impossible to use classical probability, we can estimate the probability of an outcome to be the proportion of the time the outcome occurs during many repetitions of the experiment. 3. subjective probability: this is a person"s estimate of the probability of an outcome based on their gut feel or personal experience. Items inspected in the process of quality control may be classified in several ways. Consider an item that is evaluated in 3 categories: dimension (d), weight (w) and texture (t). In each category an item is classified as satisfactory (s) or unsatisfactory (u). You do not know for certain until after you have done the experiment.
