Hickey textbook starts of by making an important disincion between sex ofenders, generally non-threatening and non-progressive sexual criminals who have commited one or few crimes, and sexual predators, threatening individuals who commit muliple progressive sexual crimes. This disincion is followed by a discussion of paraphilia, which the dsm-v deines as a disorder lasing at least six months, consising of recurrent urges, fantasies and behaviors outside sexual norms. Paraphilia can be a product of psychodynamic, behavioral, cogniive, biological and interacional factors. It can moreover take a variety of forms, most of which fall under the categories of preparatory paraphilia and atack paraphilia, the former involving iniial arousal, and the later involving graiicaion deriving from the act itself. The chapter also discusses rapists and female sex ofenders, idenifying diferent subtypes of each and ofering explanaions for each typology.
