The term terrorism can be traced back to a period of political tension during the french revolution. La terreur (or the terror) refers to the reign of terror mass political uprising in french. Economic and political regime were trying to feed themselves rather than the people. Try to receive some sort of benefit. First wave: revolutionary terrorism seeks to move beyond monarch powers. Impetus: political and economic policies introduced by czars in russia and elsewhere (rulers) Activities: bombs, dynamite attacks (new technology), assassination of political leaders. Geography: overwhelming domestic, targeting political leaders; throughout europe and asia. Response: somewhat positive; terrorists considered noble and able to find refuge internationally. Second wave: national self-determination *** - creation of new states. Impetus: major world war (wwii) and new state formation. Activities: guerilla warfare against mostly military troops. Geography: mostly domestic with international aspects; terrorist group acknowledge international bonds, very little cooperation. Response: mixed, but mostly negative; the emergence of the freedom fighter.
