Focus of criminological research: use of imprisonment, does it fulfill its goals- no. Rehabilitation missing in action, may increase crime. Assumption: prison is right response to deal with offenders~ commack disagrees, prisonning of women does nothing to benefit the women, makes problems worse. Prisoning : process of incarceration and experience of confinement. Standpoint theory: resolve women"s problems or deepen. Most women enter prison with miles of problems : Over 70% have some kind of substance abuse and dependencies, comorbidity. Burnaby correctional facilities, huge number of women were sexual abused as children, abuse as adults. Commack, 78% of women she deals with are reporting physical and sexual abuse. 40% were illiterate, grade inflation, high schools not doing jobs, 25% at university. 80% are unemployed, hard to employ, don;t have credential. Have at least one child and often sole provider. 35% are aboriginal women dealing with effects of colonialism. Within prison - a new set of needs:
