Class notes: exam next week- for ritzer text; chapter 5 (esp. pages 108-116, skip until 129-132). Globalization chapter (beginning-275, 280-293 focusing on cultural dimension of globalization). Toy story was the first animated movie released by disney, and used only computer animated imagery. Objects/toys started to become humanized and take on human feelings/characteristics after this movie. In toy story, woody the cowboy represents traditional craft/life/nostalgia and is andy"s favorite toy. Buzz light year can do more things and represents more advanced technology/progress. Movie was popular across the globe, and children shared this cultural icon. Woody represents americana, american power: hero from the 50"s- traditional socioeconomic times and relationships, handmade from wood, representing real craft and uniqueness, liked by everyone, seen as a leader. Increase of hegemonic masculinity: andy"s new favorite toy. Critical theorists believe the movie is about products and consumerism: especially targets children as a new market, the toys became popular, as well as the movie.
