1960"s = new call for change to the jda: in the 1960"s there was a new focus on rights. Un declaration of the rights of the child. 1982 - charter: new awareness of individual rights in the juvenile legal process. Jda criticized on the grounds of: due process rights, safeguard for young offenders, wasn"t tough enough on youth crime, its child welfare model. Important principles of the yoa: limited accountability. Yoa = hybrid law in terms of its use in the models of justice (list = a spectrum) Child welfare model: focuses on individual needs. Justice model: focus is on the rule of law. Modified justice model: not a strict adherent to pure justice: yoa is closest to this one, includes characteristics of both child welfare and crime control. Crime-control model: retributive in its approach to justice get tough on crime . Raised minimum age to charge a child from 7 12.
