Formal and informal rules of conduct for membership in a group. They are the expectations of conduct in particular situations and they regulate human social relations and behavior. Norms vary according to how widely people accept them, how society enforces them, how it transmits them, and how much conformity they require. Folkways, mores, taboos (3 types of norms) Some norms require that everyone follows them. Informal rules for acceptable behavior within a group. Etiquette, manners, civil conduct, grooming, nonverbal behaviors, etc. Example: creature releases (emanations from the body, goffman). These may be informal but can be very powerful. They will vary depending on the group that you are in. Asking an older person for their seat on the bus. These are taken much more seriously and are seen as essential to our core values. These are usually codified, for example the criminal code of canada.
