This approach to crime assumes a consensus about the law and crime everyone is in agreement about the nature of humans and crime, and makes assumptions about deviance. E. g. , primitive cultures (aboriginal). mechanical solidarity: consensus is based on culture, not on force or law. Organic solidarity: complex, different (e. g. , paris), highly organized division of labour, interdependent segment, solidarity based in diversity. Because society is more stratified and interdependent on individuals and their relationships to others, there is the injection of law. Durkheim and law: collective conscience (or consensus), plays an essential role, mechanical = enforces uniformity, organic = regulates interaction. In organic society, crime was sometimes useful, and was used by the state to shore up solidarity and the collective conscience by focusing on certain types of criminal/criminal behaviour. This is in line with positivist outlook for purposes of crime.
