Sociology 2259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Jeremy Bentham, Deism, Cesare Beccaria
Document Summary
Last week : demonic perspective, supernatural explanations of deviance, monotheistic vs. pantheistic world views, monotheistic one god vs. one evil. Evil was still explained in supernatural terms, but people had some responsibility. Historically, women have been seen as more deviant (pandora"s box, adam and eve), those who are morally weak", children, people with mental illness, those who drank too much : pantheistic multiple gods. Believe that deviance is due to the gods and they don"t have any personal responsibility for their bad behaviour. In the demonic period, they tortured people to try to save the soul: deterrence started to emerge as a new way of controlling deviance. They wanted a swift and certain punishment for deviant behaviour enforced through a controlled system. The new ideology was that the cost of nonconformity should be higher than deviant behaviour. *remember that this system wasn"t yet developed, but developing.
