We need to start to develop empathy esp. when working with vulnerable populations or those who we have biases towards. This is a video by "bene brown on empathy": empathy fuels connection, sympathy drives disconnection. Class example: 9 skills (on slide above) and we guess which profession they"re for: nurse, psychologist, teacher, anyone who works with people, the answer from the prof is police officer. Social worker: we think more of harder skills though, we think of these skills however of being typically female, this is what they"re saying they want new police officers to do. Restorative justice at centre of a lot of our initiatives: need to empathize with criminals. Or socially: the current consensus here is. Think about the words we use- she says think about every bad word you"re not allowed to say, and what message theyre supposed to send and to who.
