Deviance is a continuum: remember that deviance and criminal are not synonymous, there are some crimes that are not considered deviant and a lot of deviance that is not criminal, ex. Underage drinking: also crimes that aren"t deviant. Informal and formal reaction sanction to deviance: formal- things you are expected to follow at uwo, ex. Smoke free campus, no cheating/plagiarism: accompanied by a set of consequences. If we don"t assume someone is a threat to us we take their humanity away ex. How do they maintain it: objective (criminology) vs. subjective (deviance, both together help us get a wholistic way of studying things we studied before. Is about making sure that each person is able to participate as valued, respected and contributing members of society (wotherspoon, 2002, p. viii) Informal vs formal censoring: katy perry on sesame street, parents lost their minds because of her outfit.
