Subcultures have characteristics about them that makes them unique from the wider culture around them: these can be obvious characteristics or not. Defining youth: where would you look at if you were to study youth, how do they interact with each other, the language they use - constantly evolving. The book she wrote sold in everyday bookstores - one of things she was saying is problems we are having with youth is problems we have created. We see a need to control or watch for: technology, drugs and alcohol. A lot of focus in beginning was on male youth and was often focused on gangs. In chicago, this was a response to a problem at that time. Idea of master status: people who are willing to do the work who are hard workers, thrasher thought eventually the gangs would dissolve because the superficial fight for land and because of capitalism would fizz out.
