Sociology 2259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Frank Zappa, Tabula Rasa, Social Contract
Document Summary
Professor"s favourite quote: without deviance from normality, there can be no progress . Function of society: how do we maintain order, the social contract and human nature, complex society structure = complex social control. Social contracts are the unwritten rules we follow. In order to have a social contract there needs to be punishment for those who break the rules. When you watch something bad happen, the instant response of the community is to judge. We should be less judgmental and look at why people commit these crimes and what goes on at a deeper level. In order to have a civil society, we have to give up some of our rights in order for people to keep us safe. Some of the things we give up are privacy (cameras are everywhere, social media), pat downs at airports (we are okay with that because we know it is for our own safety).
