Privatization of prisons/ prison industrial complex: beginning of privatization: convict leasing. Leasing large number of convicts to farmers and factory owners: prisoner reentry industry: not just a collection of institutions and organizations, also a state of mind reentry is post prison supervision. Spend money to create a bond: danger is guaranteed amount of beds by private prisons. If crime rates fall, people not sent to this prison and threat of law suits: political implications: private prisons spend lots money lobbying government. Involve family members and loved ones in reentry process to strengthen family and community ties low income families have trouble staying connected with their incarcerated family member. Cost of travel to these places is travelling: cannot have former incarcerated person living in public housing. Jobs person cant qualify for if they have a felony conviction, cannot contribute to family support.
