Purpose of criminal jusice system is to control and prevent crime. Require current and accurate informaion on the paterns and extent of crimes (naionally and within regions) Diferent measures in place to collect and interpret crime staisics: some look at crime over either a one year or a muliple period. Gss: general social survey: looks at vicimizaion: asks quesions in regards to being home alone at night, taking public transportaion at night, walking alone at night. Fear of crime is measured in two ways: by feelings of saisfacion with personal safety from crime, by an individual anicipated fear or worry about becoming a vicim. In comparison to 2009, the overall crime rate in 2010 declined by 5% Motor vehicle thet, arson, break and enters are declining. Violent crime rate: more serious, 21% of crimes, overall are mainly decreasing but . Homicides, atempted murder, serious assaults are declining. Criminal harassment , sexual assault, ighter arm.
