Sociology 2246A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: The Maritimes, Medicalization
Document Summary
Lecture 7 - experience of ilness, dying, & death. Illness analyzes the social constructions around diseases. Medicalization - social process by which we decided what should be treated and what shouldn"t be. Problems arise when the three don"t overlap. Healthy people have a never-ending supply of spoons. You have to know how many spoons you"re starting with. You don"t want to run low on spoons because you never know when you"ll truly need them. When you are sick you have to consciously make decisions about choices. People who are chronically ill don"t have an endless amount of energy at the beginning of the day. You can never forget you are chronically ill. Acute illnesses usually don"t have a significant impact on our daily lives. Contested illness often have a set of symptoms w/ no distinct tests & no biological cause. People make sense of their illness in many different ways. Understanding patient experiences has a significant effect on health outcomes.
