12 february 2014: durkheim"s view of social stability and social change, social change is happening because of increasing population density putting pressure on resources available, our struggle to exist, how do we deal with this? i. ii. Increasing the complexity of the division of labor. If you break a law people just want to put things back to the way they were: not interested in shame, collective consciousness is replaced with individual consciousness. Made up of two different social forces/facts: integration. A force that draws us together: regulation. A force that keeps us in line. Have solidarity when they are properly balanced. Different ratios of these two things make different kinds of solidarity. Low integration, high regulation: simple division of labor compensated by a strong collective conscious, cant withstand increasing population density. Interdependence keeps us together now: individuality is created by the division of labor. Reason why we are a student is because we are not a professor.
