One of the premises of the free press in a democracy is that ciizens will be exposed to a variety of perspecives and sources of informaion in order to paricipate meaningfully in public life. News organizaions have the freedom to report without being subject to oppressive restricions: lack of censorship, unfetered ability to communicate. Fewer and fewer corporaions own more and more of the media outlets in a given market: limits the consumer choice, diicult for new entrants to break into the market. Another trend is the control of muliple type of media funcions by one irm: ex: the walt disney company owns abc, espn, hundreds of radio staions, and. Concentraion of mass media in fewer and fewer hand give rise to the following: deprives the public of independent sources of informaion and interpretaion, limits diversity of opinion, encourages the public to accept their society as it is.
