Deviancy model = kids are going to be traumatized and get into drugs and alcohol: family is not intact. Idea is that you need find a husband or wife and make your family back into a nuclear family. Crude divorce rate estimates that amount of people who get divorced, it takes into account the entire population. Marriage is on the decline, but cohabitation is on the rise. Predictors of divorce: micro sociological, would look at the dynamics in the relationship, meso sociological, divorce is not evenly spread out through society, macro sociological, looks at the big picture. In society with lower age at marriage fewer divorces: higher rates of childbearing, strongly institutionalize religion, extended families, restrictive divorce laws. Age gap: norm in canada is 2-3-year gap between partners, normal for guys to date someone a lot younger, but it is not normal for girls. Cohabitation: depends on the length of cohabitation, higher longer period of time prior to marriage.
