Sibling relationships: family constellation: structure of the family including birth order, type of relationship between kids and parents (ex: adopted, step kids, etc. Parent-child relationship=biggest determinant of relationship between siblings. Sibling abuse is the most common but least discussed type of abuse in families. Women will become quite close to sisters in their elder years: relationship with family especially parent/child, characteristics of individual kids. Older personality, social and cognitive skills. Have older child participating with the new baby to make transition more smooth. If closely spaced, spend more time together than with parents: sibling rivalry is more intense in early years and simmers off as kids get older, all kids benefit from larger intervals. More/less time spent with parents (quality time > quantity of time) Academic achievement is greater in families of less kids.
