Universal traditional nuclear family: many variations in family structure, ex: single parent families (technically=lone parent family) Stable harmonious past: the good old days , ex: issues such as teen pregnancy, abuse, etc. occurred in the 50s but was never talked about like it is now. Potential exam questions (short answer): in order for families to operate properly=structural functionalist, families rely on conflict to function properly=conflict theorist. Types of power: legitimate authority, head of the house , parent, oldest, etc, financial, highest earner, physical coercion, spanking children, abusing spouse, love, emotional coercion (ex: if you love me you won"t go fishing this weekend, temper tantrums. Criticisms: fails to demonstrate how families contribute to society, doesn"t explain why norms/values for family"s change slowly.
