Sociology 2206A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Jargon, Semi-Structured Interview
Document Summary
Examine 1 case in light of your explanation. If the explanation fits, look at other cases; if not reforumalate the theory or redefine the problem. This process continues until the researcher is satisfied that the theory is unlikely to be refuted by new data. Also known as a discovery interview or guided conservation. Trying to figure out how things work. Guided interview (general ideas of what you want to ask) but don"t use an interview schedule (questionnaire) It can generate qualitative data in depth from the participants because they can talk as much or as little as they like. Can increase validity because the interviewer can probe for deeper understanding. Difficult to train people to carry out the unstructured interviews. Need to develop rapour with their subjects. Tend to last longer so you don"t get as many done. Not as much external validity because most likely will be using non probability sampling tehniques.
