Document Summary
It is not practical or reasonable to study every single person. In terms of costs and time, we have a restraint. Hopefully the subset that we use as our sample will be able to well represent the population. The beauty of sampling: you need to be able to generalize(quantitative research)/transferability (qualitative) the sample to the population without having to study every single person. Sampling: the process of selecting a subset of cases in order to draw conclusions about the entire set. Key terms: target population, sampling frame, sample, coverage error, sampling error statistics vs parameters. The population to which researchers would like to generalize their results. Units of analysis: the entity about whom or which the researchers gathers information (individuals, groups, social artifacts) In your research assignment remember to include information about your target population. A subset of people selected for a study. This subset should represent the entire population in order to make a generalization.
