New thinking in research methods advocate the use of a mixed methodology. An attempt to overcome the limitations associated with the use of either an exclusively quantitative method or a qualitative method. Why use mixed methods? combine both quantitative & qualitative research to obtain the best of both worlds . Can avoid limitations of using a research method based on 1 particular method. Quality assessed through words, images & description. Research initiates, reformulates, deflects & clarifies theory. Nomothetic (approach based on laws) vs idiographic (humans create their social structure) Etic (quantitative-we look at a social phenomenon & we look from the outside in) vs emic perspective (qualitative-being on the inside & describing it from the inside) Norman denzin 4 types of triangulation: data triangulation: gathering data through several sampling strategies, so that slices of data at different times & social situations, as well as on a variety of people, are gathered.
