Norms for the ethics of research involving human subjects are developed & refined within an ever-evolving societal context, elements of which include the need for research & the research community, moral imperatives & ethical principles & the law. We acknowledge that there is a need for research. Overall moral imperative: respect for human dignity. Using a subject-centred perspective (you see the world through the subjects eyes not the researchers) Academic freedoms & responsibilities (having the right to do research) The policy applies to all (a) research involving living human participants (b) research involving human biological materials, as well as human embryos, fetuses, fetal tissue, reproductive materials & stem cells. This applies to materials derived from living & deceased individuals (article 2. 1) Whether the research is funded or not.
