People think the media affects others, but not themselves. Opinions, identities, how you view the world comes from the media: we think we"re immune to it when in actual fact it"s not true. Media culture dictates how to be a man or woman in society. Ads are powerful: repeated over and over, very visual, we are less conscious of the content they"re just ads". There are different qualities assigned to each sex. Study: by 24 hours of age, parents treat their children differently depending on gender: parents are louder, rougher with boys. Functional ranking: how advertising dictates a male or female"s position in society. Women are more likely to be depicted in ads selling domestic products, activities in the home the private sphere. Men are shown in ads as out in the world" or in business public sphere. Even when women are shown in business positions, they are often sexualized. Relative size: advertising depicts women as physically smaller than men.
