Sao paolo bans outdoor ads in fight against pollution. Implemented a ban on outdoor advertising in sept 2006. Whole city was stripped of outdoor advertising. Clean city law outlawed the use of all outdoor advertising (billboards, transit, etc. ) Before enacted, alarm among city businesses and other economic constituents. Believed to be million loss in revenue, net job loss of 20,000 people. 5 years later (2011), sao paolo continued to exist without advertisements. 70% of city residents find the ban beneficial. Removal of logos and slogans exposed previously overlooked architecture aesthetics of the city improved considerably. Hope is that this will catch on around the world. People were concerned that the focus could be placed on more pressing issues. Residents were seeing long-standing impoverished neighbourhoods that had previously been covered up. Ex: sweet and low + lifesaver = low life. These companies were not happy to have their products used in this way.
