More family violence found in societies where: (1) men control women"s lives; (2) violent resolution to conflicts is acceptable; (3) mothers bear major responsibility for childrearing. Explanations for family violence focus on certain kinds of people": drug and alcohol abusers, mental illness, immigrants, poor people. In 2500 bc: a man could beat his wife w/ brick engraved w/ her name for talking back to him. In middle ages: wives could be burnt at stake; rule of thumb". Women in 1800s: expected to adhere to husbands" standards, victimized in public and private spheres. Honor killings" of young women and girls are not that uncommon in india, pakistan and the middle east. Un estimates that, worldwide, there are about 5,000 such killings each year. Domestic violence happens to everyone all races, religions, income, and education levels.
