Introduction to sociology 1027b - life"s not fair. Your parent"s jobs & level of education. We think of success as something that is completely meritocratic and based solely on our own efforts. We think of success as something that is based solely on individual achievement. Meritocracy is defined as government or the holding of power by persons selected competitively according to merit. Key aspects of meritocracy according to this definition. Power is achieved, not ascribed (i. e. not inherited) The next head of state of canada is not going to be competitively chosen. It is not a meritocratic for of power. Report card, ossd, allows people to asses you in comparison to someone else. Universal access: free public schooling (i. e. it is mandatory by law to go to school) Progression system (i. e. as you go through school, things become more difficult, sorting begins to take place)
