What we believe to be real is real in its consequences. Applied on a macro level, if we treat people as a different race then we will believe it to be true. How do we become who we are as an individual. We learn through repetition, fear, praise, demonstration: you cannot exist as a social being without interaction with other people, the sense of who you are is based on comparison to others. What is the self": preparatory stage imitate others, play stage take on roles of others. Stages of the development of the self. Nature v nurture: mostly a combo of both, game stage- take into account multiple roles simultaneously. We imagine how we appear to others. We incorporate these perceived judgments into our own self-concept. Social structure takes place within the social structure. Social institutions: relatively permanent social structures that govern behaviour of groups and promote social order, formal organizations.
