Lecture 9 - social control, deviance, and crime. Our laws are formal rules that show what is acceptable and unacceptable in society. Retroactive occurs when you"ve done something wrong and there is a sanction. Social isolation is a powerful tool of social control. Preventive keeps people from doing things we don"t want them to do. Deviance involves people who violate those norms. There is a continuum of different norms in society (ex. The formal level focuses on the criminal justice system, whereas the informal level focuses on the social reaction. There are many deviant things that are not criminal (ex. There are crimes that are not deviant (ex. Things that are extremely deviant usually have a formal component to them. The biggest interests ore often in regards to extreme deviance and crime. Trying to understand the power dynamics in the social experiences we face. Spikes to prevent homeless people from sleeping there.
