Suicide is often regarded as a supremely antisocial and non-social act. Focus is on individual states of mind rather than on the state of society. Sociological perspective can be applied to the causes of suicide. Before it was never regarded as a social act and wasn"t something that was talked about. Mile durkheim: at end of 19th century, demonstrated suicide rates were strongly influenced by social forces. Examined association between rates of suicide and rates of psychological disorder for different groups. Durkheim argued suicide rates varied as result of differences in degree of social solidarity in different categories of the population. Social solidarity refers to: degree which group member agree with each other on social beliefs and their intensity and frequency they interact with each other. Operationalize: when you take something abstract and turn it into something meaningful, with some justification. And to operationalize it would be to give a reason why (heart rate, bmi, blood pressure)
